However, he suffers a crushing failure at the Mathematical Olympiad and gives up on his dreams. Having been stripped of his status as an honors student over failing to become the Japanese representative at the international Mathematical Olympiad, Gaku now works part-time at his school's cafeteria. He ends up having an encounter with the young culinary prodigy Kai Asakura over a simple plate of napolitan pasta. Burned out on math and lacking passion, he decides to no longer participate in mathematic competitions, which angers the school chairman. He gives Gaku notice that he is being expelled and must repay his scholarship, effective immediately. As a lifeline, Kai, who’s been asked to cook for the chairman’s private dinner, presents a bold proposition to a cornered Gaku. Gaku begins to apply his mathematical mind to the art of cooking, thinking of recipes as equations with the flavor as the final answer.
