Naruto is incensed at the way Tsunade disrespects the position of Hokage and challenges her to a fight. Naruto uses the Fourth Hokage’s technique which he’s been practicing but is easily countered. Naruto declares that he will master the jutsu, and Tsunade tells him if he masters the jutsu within a certain timeframe she’ll give him her precious necklace!
A Dubious Offer! Tsunade’s Choice
Naruto practices hard so he can win the necklace from Tsunade. Meanwhile, Tsunade is in a dilemma over Orochimaru’s offer. Her hesitation to promptly refuse leads Kabuto to assume she’ll take the offer.

Gripped by the desire to see Nawaki and Dan, Tsunade almost succumbs to Orochimaru’s tempting offer. But seeing Nawaki and Dan’s dreams carried on by Naruto, she breaks off the deal. Orochimaru is determined to heal his arm and focuses on exploiting Tsunade’s weakness.

Tsunade, Naruto, and the others start heading back to the Leaf Village where Tsunade will formally become the Fifth Hokage. At Tsunade's urging, they stop at a town with hot springs. Waiting for them there is the Akagi gang, who lent money to Tsunade years before. They steal the necklace while Naruto and the others are bathing. Naruto chases after them, but he starts to sympathize with them when they tell him their story.

Naruto asks Tsunade to heal Sasuke and Lee before she is installed as the Hokage. After examining Lee, she tells him to find a path other than of that of a shinobi. After fighting Gaara during the Chunin Exam, Lee's body is too damaged. What will Lee do now that his dream is crushed? Meanwhile, the Leaf Village is still trying to recover from the attack of the Sound ninja.
The Will of Fire Still Burns
Lee hesitates when Tsunade asks him whether he will quit pursuing the path of a ninja or choose to undergo a risky surgery with only a fifty percent chance of success. Meanwhile, Konohamaru is in shock from the passing of the Third Hokage. Konohamaru is unhappy with Tsunade, who has become the new Hokage. Tsunade is ready to wrestle the troublesome boy into submission, but Naruto tries to settle things.

After being advised by Tsunade to quit the path of the shinobi, Lee recalls his first meeting with his teacher Guy. Unable to master either ninjutsu or genjutsu, Lee has always been looked down upon by the others. Mission: Help an Old Friend in the Land of Tea!
Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura are sent on a B-rank mission to the neighboring Land of Tea. They are to protect the runners in a race being held during the Todoroki Shrine's ceremonial ritual held every four years. On their way to the Land of Tea, the three meet a mysterious man, Idate, who says he hates ninja. Itade throws fighting words at the three, and then runs off at unbelievable speed. When the three meet up with Jirocho, their client, they are surprised to learn the true purpose of their mission.
The Race is On! Trouble on the High Seas!
The chief retainers think that Idate has made a farce of their great traditional festival. Jirocho believes that Idate has fled with some plan in mind. Meanwhile, Naruto and the others have caught up with the fleeing Idate. They plead with him since it is their job to protect him against Aoi and the other Rain ninja. But Idate hates ninja and will not listen.
Run Idate Run! Nagi Island Awaits!
Naruto and his squad manage to catch up to Idate, only to find him hurt and unconscious with Aoi nearby. Fukusuke, the runner for the Wagarashi clan, is so certain he can win he takes a break!
A Fierce Battle of Rolling Thunder!
Despite interference from Aoi, Idate continues his run. Idate still trusts no one, and it’s revealed that during the Chunin Exams, Idate’s older brother was the proctor who posed the tenth question. Although torn by his feelings for his comrades, Idate was determined to become a chunin and resolved to do his best. But his squad was told that they failed.
The Last Leg: A Final Act of Desperation
Boss Jirocho waits, confident that Idate will win. But Aoi, the ninja sent by the Wagarashi clan, stands in the way. Just before the finish line, Aoi brings Sasuke down. Sakura tries to save him and both end up falling over the cliff. Despite his injuries Naruto summons all his remaining strength to protect Idate and save Sasuke and Sakura.
The Battle Begins: Naruto vs. Sasuke
Shikamaru is promoted to chunin, and he and his squadmates celebrate at a BBQ restaurant. In the hospital, Lee decides to undergo a dangerous surgery to repair his body so that he can remain a ninja. At the same time, Sasuke broods over Naruto getting stronger, while the evil hand of Orochimaru reaches toward him...
Bitter Rivals and Broken Bonds
Naruto and Sasuke release their ultimate weapons against each other, and just in time Kakashi arrives to stop the fight. Sasuke has seen Naruto’s progress and burns with resentment and his growing desire for revenge against his brother, Itachi.
An Invitation from the Sound
The Sound Ninja Four, Kidomaru, Sakon, Jirobo, and Tayuya, suddenly appear before Sasuke. Sakura is concerned about the Curse Mark placed on Sasuke by Orochimaru, but Naruto tries to calm her fears, telling her that Sasuke would never go to Orochimaru. But Orochimaru’s promise of strength is too enticing for Sasuke to turn down.

Sakura’s pleas fall on deaf ears, and Sasuke leaves Hidden Leaf Village. When Tsunade learns of this, she summons Shikamaru to lead his first mission as a chunin. Shikamaru gathers his team of Naruto, Choji, Neji, Kiba, and Akamaru, and they set out to retrieve Sasuke.
Sound vs. Leaf
The Sound Ninja Four race toward Orochimaru’s lair with Sasuke in hand. They’re discovered and challenged by the jonin Genma and Raido, but the Leaf ninja are already fatigued, and they fall to the Sound. Meanwhile, Shikamaru’s retrieval squad proceeds to follow the Sound with caution.
Squad Mutiny: Everything Falls Apart!
Naruto and the others are trapped in Jirobo’s Earth Dome Prison. They try to pound their way out, but the walls regenerate each time. The five slowly weaken as Jirobo drains their chakra from without. Shikamaru attempts to get Jirobo to let him out alone, but his apparent betrayal of his squad has a hidden purpose.
Full Throttle Power! Choji, Ablaze!
After they are freed from the Earth Dome Prison, Shikamaru and the others take off after the remaining Sound while Choji stays behind. Choji pulls out the three secret pills of his clan and takes the first—the green pill—to increase his strength, and faces his challenger, Jirobo, alone.
Good-bye Old Friend! I’ll Always Believe in You!
After Choji takes the yellow pill it looks as if he may win the battle, until Jirobo transforms into Second State, giving him immense power. Choji has only one option left, to take the red pill, at the risk of losing his life.
Your Opponent is Me!
Assuming that the Leaf squad could never get past Jirobo, the remaining Sound ninja don’t bother to lay traps along the way. Taking advantage of that, Shikamaru disguises himself as Jirobo and catches up with the Sound. But they see through him right away, and Shikamaru gets tangled in Kidomaru’s web.
360 Degrees of Vision: The Byakugan’s Blind Spot!
Neji takes on Kidomaru while the others continue their pursuit of Sasuke and the remaining Sound ninja. Neji uses his Gentle Fist, and Kidomaru realizes he’s better off attacking from afar and seeking out Neji’s weakness.
Losing is Not an Option!
Kidomaru changes tactics and creates a bow and arrow to attack Neji’s blind spot. Once he’s able to pinpoint the blind spot exactly, Neji may have no defenses left, unless he’s able to turn Kidomaru’s attack back onto the attacker!
The Vessel Arrives Too Late
Naruto, Shikamaru, Kiba and Akamaru are in hot pursuit of Sasuke and the Sound ninja. Naruto and Kiba are upset that they have been unable to catch up and decide to try a surprise attack at night. Meanwhile, Orochimaru lies on the verge of death, impatient to claim his new body. But the Sound ninja may not get Sasuke there in time.
Miscalculation: A New Enemy Appears!
Akamaru sets explosives in the trees to trap Sakon. But an incensed Sakon turns the tables, and the explosives end up sending Kiba, Akamaru and Sakon off a cliff. Meanwhile, Tayuya steadily advances towards Naruto’s team. Naruto prepares to battle, but suddenly a new threat, Kimimaro, looms behind him.
Roar and Howl! The Ultimate Tag-Team!
Shikamaru is determined to stop Tayuya, but she uses her Summoning Jutsu to call forth three giants. Meanwhile, on the plains, the battle between Kimimaro and Naruto is about to begin. And as Kiba and Akamaru fight together at the bottom of the ravine, a new foe appears. From within Sakon’s body, his brother Ukon appears.
